Bell-mère was a former Marine, the owner of a mikan farm in Cocoyasi Village, and the adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko. She raised the two girls in her hometown for approximately nine years until she was murdered by Arlong.

In her youth, Bell-mère was a renowned trouble maker. While her decision to join the Marines shocked all her fellow villagers, they all cared deeply for her welfare despite the trouble that she had always given them. Due to her past, her decision to adopt her daughters led her fellow villagers to fear the children's own welfare. However, Bell-mère was determined to show them that she had grown into a mature adult who was capable of such responsibilities. She still retained some of her mischievous nature upon her return to Cocoyasi, offering to pay Genzo for Nami's thefts "with her body", despite knowing how he reacts; this most likely explains where Nami got her personality from, as she even used the same phrase when Genzo captured her, much to his frustration. As a Marine, Bell-mère was quite confident, her reaction to Shiki's escape from Impel Down being to state that she would stop him herself should he attack the East Blue. Her fellow marines noted that she was very reliable, indicating she was likely a very effective member of the Marines. Nevertheless, she left the organization after barely surviving a warzone in the Oykot Kingdom, an event which in which she became disillusioned and almost lost all hope for her life until she met Nojiko and Nami. Although Bell-mère genuinely strived to be a loving mother and provide a good home for her daughters to the point of self-sacrifice, she occasionally acted rather impulsively, such as when she hitted Nami for suggesting that Nojiko is not her real sister, a reaction which seriously upset the two girls, and, in a comedic moment, when she hitted a boy for saying that her mikans taste bad moments after Bell-mère stated to Nami she shouldn't have hit the boy. Bell-mère openly admitted that Nojiko is more mature than she was.
