Kalgara was a warrior of the Shandia who lived on Jaya around 400 years ago. He was renowned among his people as the "Great Warrior of Shandora" and feared as the "Demon of Shandora" by outsiders. During his life, he befriended the later infamous explorer Mont Blanc Noland, and the two promised to meet again.

Kalgara was a tremendously loyal man who cared about serving and protecting his tribe above all else. Whenever the Shandia faced any sort of threat, Kalgara was always the first to pick up arms and attack the enemy responsible with no hesitation. Kalgara often demonstrated a bloodthirsty disposition against opponents, saying he would "eliminate" them, though with encroaching sailors he generally appeared to allow them to escape alive if they left their belongings behind. Kalgara's devotion to his tribe extended to faithfully keeping the customs surrounding worship of their gods and ancestors and carrying on the legacy of the original settlers of Shandora. He never questioned the words of the Pantri, and firmly believed that harm would fall on the Shandia if the gods were displeased. Though it brought him no happiness to sacrifice his daughter to the gods, Kalgara's faith in his tribe's customs led him to believe this process was essential and that it was improper to go about the sacrifice selfishly, even reprimanding Mousse for showing trepidation towards her death once Noland spared her. Because of Kalgara's devotion, he was gravely offended when Noland cast his tribe's sacrificial customs as small-minded and barbaric. Though he normally tried to swiftly dispatch enemies, Kalgara showed a sense of humor during his conflict with Noland after judging the explorer's tribulations to be the wrath of the gods, as he challenged Noland to overcome these tribulations himself and kept watch as the explorer fruitlessly attempted to do so. With that said, Kalgara was not an unreasonable man; indeed, he showed the willingness to change his beliefs and practices if he had reason to believe that an alternative method would achieve a worthwhile result. This led him to assist Noland in delivering his cure to the village, and even kill a "god" in the process, once Noland laid out the clear reasoning for believing in his ability to cure the deadly plague. Once it was made clear that the village had found its path to salvation without the need for human sacrifice, Kalgara was willing to abandon the practice, and although a misunderstanding regarding the Ancestor Trees nearly caused Kalgara to turn his back on Noland's ideal of "progress" later on, he likewise understood the necessity of cutting the trees down once the reason was explained to him.
